Let’s find out what vegan culture is really about

Veganism is the new buzz word we hear in the industry of food. When did it become so important? How have our food preferences changed over time? What are other alternatives? Does the label of veganism make a person/product/item better? If a person’s culture promotes eating meat, does that mean the person is insensitive or a rogue in character?

Let’s find out.

How did Veganism arrive to our plates?

The movement emerged from advocacy groups and animal-rights organizations who believed that animal farming was under-discussed internationally. As a consequence, it is now commonly proposed that a plant-based diet must be at the vanguard of the green campaign and ethical veganism, especially according to various advocacy organizations.

Meat and fish are not allowed in vegan and vegetarian diets. Vegan diets, on the other hand, take the stride farther by eliminating all animal-derived foods. So, in conjunction to not eating meat, vegans shun dairy products, eggs, and honey. Furthermore, vegan cuisine never contains any livestock farming leftovers such as fat, milk, or collagen. In comparison to a vegetarian diet, a vegan diet offers numerous benefits. Vegan meals remove all forms of cruelty of farm animals, whereas plant proteins only lessen it. In comparison to diets that incorporate dairy and eggs, a vegan diet may have medical and ecological benefits

  • However, is there another side to the story? Are there any disadvantages to veganism?

Vegans have to take additional precautions to guarantee that they are getting adequate iron, zinc, vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. They are also at a higher threat of getting a Vitamin B12 deficiency, which, if left unchecked, can result in irreparable neurological problems. For some people, a vegan diet is untenable, therefore it's vital to realize that it's not a diet that works for all of us. The plant based diet eliminates all animal energy sources in favor of plant-based protein sources such as lentils. While lentils are rich in proteins, they also include antinutrients such as phytates and lectin, which can promote gastrointestinal permeability and induce 'leaky gut.' Iron is found in plant-based diets, but it is of the 'low-heme' kind, which is poorly absorbed by the body. As a result, vegetarians and vegans are more susceptible to iron shortage.

  • Is Veganism an all encompassing solution?

Veganism is by far the fastest and most efficient strategy to eliminate foods associated with animal suffering and execution from your diet. However, because many widespread commodities contain problematic food production, a vegan diet won't be able to eliminate all abuse and oppression related to your dietary choices. Crops have unspoken but heinous human prices. Operators who harvest cashews, for example, frequently suffer from permanently damaging sunburns on their fingers. The corrosive oils that encase the indigestible fruit that is carefully scraped from each nut cause this injury. Many agricultural workers around the world are forced to work in deplorable circumstances for pitiful wages. Even the most environmentally friendly small-scale agriculture includes slaughter.

  • As per The Bad Billy, beginning to recognize the importance of choice is important. If one is unable to change their diet into a plant based /vegan diet, there is no need to ridicule or shame. Veganism is a choice towards ethical and oppression-free food systems. It becomes important to respect food choices, diversity, genetic requirements and geographical divisions. Having said that, slowly shifting to a cleaner and greener diet is crucial, and right for us and the environment. Choosing a greener diet is what we need and gradually shifting and making lifestyle changes in this direction will make the change more pleasant and sustainable. The flag unfurling behind that of veganism is of animal rights, and treating every living being with love, care and kindness is important.
